ISG, Primark

Project Value to Cheshire Scaffolds Ltd: £650k+
Main Contractor: ISG Pearce Ltd
Main Contract Value: £25m

Cheshire Scaffolds was awarded this contract initially in by principal contractor ISG Pearce Ltd.

This was a high profile job for Primark in the city centre of Manchester. Countless hours were spent at the planning stage by our sales team, involving meetings with the Metrolink light rail system, Manchester City Council Highways Department, designers and hoist and alarm specialists.

Cheshire Scaffolds was asked to erect a fully boarded independent access scaffold around all elevations of this historic building. This was a challenge as the scaffold not only had to be designed to suit a busy loading bay area to the rear of Primark but also to provide an access scaffold along Market Street which is one of the busiest pedestrianized area in Manchester. In addition the Metrolink light railway system ran parallel with the scaffold only 6m away from the line of the building.

Due to the location of the building and the interface with members of the public, Cheshire Scaffolds purchased Combisafe netting in an effort to maintain high standards of safe working practice.

Internally, there were major alterations to all areas, including a full shop floor refit with additional lifts and escalators being introduced throughout. The refurbishment was carried out in stages to ensure that the Primark store remained open to the public at all times.

Major demolition works were carried out on the roof and due to weight restrictions, all scaffolds had to be designed to allow for the above restrictions.

The project had a tight programme that has been issued, Cheshire Scaffolds Ltd have in excess of 20 operatives on site at all times, a permanent site based manager, and a constant stream of deliveries arriving on site from  4am each morning.

The contract was complex, and problems occurred on a daily basis, however, Cheshire Scaffolds Ltd provided the professionalism, experience and expertise the project needed to achieve the completion time, much to the appreciation and satisfaction of the principal contractor ISG Pearce.
